My Heritage

There are some things that I associate as part of my heritage that are also things that connect me to many other people outside my family. My family is from El Salvador, but I usually associated with many Mexican-American teens and their families. However, that really did not interfere with our relationship because we shared many of the same values and sense of living. Our social status is something that brought us together. Living in Los Angeles is one thing that was part of our “heritage.” The daily traffic and rush hour is something we all got accustomed to that it was strange to live without it. Los Angeles also meant that many of us came from middle class families and that made us more comfortable with each other.

When it comes to Salvadoran heritage, the first thing that comes to mind is the food. Pupusas are a traditional Salvadoran dish that is consisted of a corn tortilla stuffed with either pork, cheese and/ or beans. It is not most popular dish in my heritage. Though my family does not prepare this dish regularly, it still brings us closer together when it is made.

Another thing of my heritage that is more on the personal side are my hobbies. On my down time I enjoy listening to music and reading. The type of music that I listen to is what I feel really sets me apart from some other heritages. The reason for this is because I do not just have one certain genre of music. It varies from rock to oldies to pop to Spanish music every day. However, the mixture in genres is a type of heritage within itself.

Heritage, for me, does not mean that you are one thing. It means that you can be involved and practice as much as you wish. It means that I can one day be totally obsessed with watching Netflix on my laptop and the next making Spanish dishes with my mother because that is my heritage. It is who I am.
